Ask for a reference with a useful brief
Give your recommender enough context and time to write an informed reference.
Choose someone who knows your work
A detailed reference from someone who has taught, supervised, or worked closely with you is more useful than a title alone.
Ask clearly and early
Explain your study plans, deadlines, and why you are asking them. Give them a graceful opportunity to decline.
Make a reference packet
Share a current CV, the program description, relevant work samples, submission instructions, and a concise list of projects you completed together.
Track the official process
Confirm whether the institution needs the recommender to upload or email the letter directly. Respect confidentiality requirements and send a polite reminder when appropriate.
